School is out for most Middle Tennessee youth and we wanted to revisit internet safety tips for youth. With less structure and more free time available to teens in the summer, Rodger Dinwiddie, CEO of Students Taking A Right Stand (STARS) and president of the International Bullying Association, said there are several important points for parents and guardians to consider when protecting their teens online.

“It is an interesting and challenging time for families with most teens on break from school which is why we are reminding folks of some important online safety guidelines and sharing Facebook safety tips to help families create an environment of online safety,” Dinwiddie said.

Internet Safety Guidelines:

  1. In the home, designate a common area for computer use.
  2. One adult needs to be assigned the role as the family computer expert. This person acts as a resource, liaison and watchdog for family technology issues.
  3. Consider a Family Internet Use Contract as a preventative measure for cyber bullying and to help keep teens safe in an online world.
