2014 Adam Award Nomination

What Is The ADAM Award (Accepting Differences Among Mankind)?

The ADAM award was established to honor the life of Adam Duke, son of Alva and Mark Duke of Franklin, TN. Adam Duke was born with Down syndrome and although his life did not last long, his memory and impact on the world will forever be felt. In 1981, Alva founded Kids on the Block to both honor Adam’s life and because she wanted to help kids learn to be accepting of each other regardless of their differences. This award is given annually, in memory of Adam Duke, to the individual who has consistently “gone the extra mile” to promote the importance of Accepting Differences Among Mankind (ADAM).

History Of The ADAM Award

In 2006, Kids on the Block merged with STARS Nashville. This has been a beautiful marriage of two programs trying to do all they can to help young people and their families embrace their potential. In 2012, we merged the Chair-ish the Kids Event (previously a Kids on the Block fundraiser) with An Evening with Vince Gill & Friends into one spectacular event, Chair-ish the Night with Vince Gill & Friends!

Last year’s Chair-ish The Night With Vince Gill & Friends event, Christopher Truelove accepted the ADAM Award for Carrie Goodwin

What Can You Do?

We would like to cast a broad net into our Middle Tennessee community to see who has been helping others Accepting Differences Among Mankind. If you know someone or an organization going the extra mile to promote acceptance and kindness, please nominate them for the 2014 ADAM Award. Complete the following nomination ADAM Award Nomination Master (fillable) and submit via mail or email to STARS. It must be received by the end of the business day on Friday, October 3, 2014.

STARS Selected For Charity Tour of Homes

Students Taking A Right Stand (STARS) has been tapped as one of the benefiting nonprofits of the 2014 Charity Tour of Homes April 25-May 4. Also a benefiting charity in 2012, STARS Chief Development Officer Erin Daunic said it is an honor to be selected again for the event which donates 100% of its profits to area nonprofits.

Students Taking A Right Stand (STARS), Nashville, TN
Bob Shaw, (MCBC) Charity Tour of Homes President, with Anne Gallo, of Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Erin Daunic, STARS.

Over two weekends, six days, with one ticket, visitors can tour 11 homes stretching from the lake of Fairvue Plantation to Thompson’s Station.  Tickets can be purchased at TicketsNashville and if you would like to help STARS as a greeter, please contact Erin at 615-983-6805.

Here’s more info on this event:

From an automated screen porch system and new kitchen and bath products to a hidden room and authentic Irish pub, the latest in gorgeous building, renovating and interior design ideas are featured at the Charity Tour of Homes, Fridays through Sundays, April 25 – May 4, with 11 decorated homes on beautiful home sites throughout Middle Tennessee with 100% of the ticket benefiting six local nonprofits.

Presented by the elite Master Custom Builders Council of Tennessee, home ranging in style from Hamptons and French Country to Charlestonian Georgian are open for tour with just one admission price allowing visitors to see stunning homes from the lake at Fairvue Plantation to Belle Meade and Thompson’s Station.

Students Taking A Right Stand (STARS), Nashville, TN
The Charity Tour of Homes selected STARS as one of its benefiting charities for the April 25-May 4 premier home tour.

Charity Tour of Homes Chairman Bryan Edwards, president of Hughes-Edwards Builders and member of the STARS board, said the tour includes the best of the best in the home building industry while helping local charities including STARS (Students Taking A Right Stand), Miriam’s Promise, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee, Sumner County CASA, High Hopes and Against The Grain.

Outdoor living areas are still a top priority for homeowners. All 11 of the homes have their own twist including two homes in Gallatin’s pretty Fairvue Plantation – one with a disappearing glass pocket door and another with an automated screen porch system.  Outdoor fireplaces, grilling stations and fire pits are also very popular and are seen in several homes. The West Nashville Manuel Zeitlin designed home which has a multi-level terrace and leads to a pool and hot tub.

Kitchens continue to trend toward the open floor plan, granite and marble counters, Thermador appliances and tile floors including one in a peacock stone. If you are interested in comparing custom cabinetry, the homes have a variety of styles, wood and finishes. This craftsmanship can also be seen in an elliptical suspended staircase in a Belle Meade Charlestonian Georgian style home and on the American Country style Franklin home’s curved staircase.

And driven by customer interest, green building elements are used in several homes from a geo-thermal HVAC and bamboo flooring to spray foam insulation for lower heating and air condition bills.

Don’t miss features this year including a Gallatin home’s Irish pub complete with a beer tap and Irish sayings carved into the pretty wood cabinetry with Irish knot trim and a secret door in a Franklin boy’s bedroom leading to a hidden playroom.

CTH 2014, Students Taking A Right Stand, (STARS), Nashville, TN
With 11 homes, 1 ticket and six days to tour, the Charity Tour of Homes selected STARS as one of its benefiting nonprofits.

Tickets are available at each individual home site for $15 or online via Charity Tour of Homes or TicketsNashville where a complete listing of home sites is available for MapQuest.

Builders participating in this year’s tour include: Kingdom Builders, McPherson-Shaw, Inc., W. Hugh Nelson Builders, Arthur Rutenberg Homes, R. Thomas Construction and Walsh Custom Homes. Additional members of MCBC of TN include: Hilton Design/Build, Hughes-Edwards Builders, Shane McFarland Construction and David Patton Construction.

The Master Custom Builders Council of Tennessee is an elite group of the finest custom-home builders in the mid-state sharing a deep passion for their craft and for providing their clients the latest in custom, residential construction at substantial discounts if they participate in the premier home tour. Originally brought together to leverage their buying power and cost savings for clients, the group established the Charity Tour of Homes in 2010 and since that time have donated over $30,000 to area nonprofit organizations.
